You will know that blooms are forthcoming when you feel the stalk forming inside
the foliage and when it pops up above the foliage, blooms are close at hand.
Season Codes
Irises usually have written indicators of bloom time in their descriptions:
VE Very Early Season
E Early Season
EM Early Mid Season
M Mid Season
ML Late Mid Season
L Late Season
VL Very Late Season
RE Rebloom
The joy in planning a bed of continuous blooms can be done from a hammock
reading iris catalogs. With a little organization, your new acquisitions can
render continuous bloom for six weeks instead of two weeks, which is common for
a variety.
Rebloom
Rebloomers are fast becoming popular, which is why we have continued to add more
each year. Just when you think its time to dig up those clumps your rebloomers
will give you an encore performance! Wait to divide until the fall blooms have
passed.
Cut Flowers
For longer lasting flowers, cut your irises early in the day with the buds just
beginning to open. Immediately place them in a bucket of water and re-cut the
stems underwater at an angle one-inch up. Keep your arranged flowers in a cool
environment and out of direct sunlight. Pinch off wilted flowers immediately.
And be sure to change the water daily.
Fragrance
Some irises have faint fragrance, others more potent, and still others have
none. Read descriptions in catalogs youll discover there are quite a few with
fragrance. One of my favorites fragrances smells like the old fizzy Grape Drink
yum!
